“Flow” is a 30 metre-long mural which I was commissioned to create for the new Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall. It runs along a curved wall and internal glazing between the hospital entrance hub and the two GP practices that are now based within the hospital.

Inspired by Orkney’s dynamic natural environment, and developed from drawings of breaking waves, river water and cloud formations, the mural makes a dramatic impact at large scale, and yet draws the eye in close-up to notice that the drawing has been created out of tiny hand-drawn circles, like millions of bubbles or water droplets.

The designs were developed through a mix of traditional watercolour and digital drawings, which were then printed onto a durable, scuff-resistant vinyl wall-covering and window film.
