‘Treading Water’ is an excerpt from an essay commissioned by the National Library of Scotland’. Along with Sink’, ‘Eddy’ and ‘Rain’ these form part of an ongoing series of film-poems or video essays made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown on an island.

Originally created for an exhibition in the Travelling Gallery, this work then went on to travel to Australia for my solo exhibition “The Subtle Ether” at CAST Gallery, Hobart in 2007. There it was installed as a large-scale projection covering a whole 16 metre wall, like a night sky of constellations of tiny midges.
