I’ve really been enjoying working with colour more lately, especially the wonderfully pigment-rich, matte colours of the Lascaux gouache paints I’ve been using, and the way they leave such lovely granular textures as they dry. With this drawing I was thinking about the colour of a wave when the sun sometimes lights it from behind as it rolls towards the shore and briefly rises up before breaking into bright, frothy foam. It’s a hard colour to get right, as there’s a luminosity inside it that can come off as a bit raw if you just slap down the paint. I hope I’ve caught a bit of that sense of light coming through water here.
