Here at 59 degrees North, at the winter solstice we only get a few hours of light before the long, dark night descends again. You would think it was a drab time of year but what is striking is how, although the days are so brief, they are full of ever-shifting colour. While the land is quiet and turned in on itself the sky is full of action as clouds flush with the colours of sunrise and sunset and their reflections flash off the puddles of rainwater gathered on tracks and in wet fields. So here’s a bit of warm yellow flushed through the grey and dull green of winter like the light of the winter solstice.
